We spent worked through the morning and into the early afternoon, heading out down the hill about 2:00. We found a roof top garden restaurant for lunch and then started doing some sightseeing in old Sorrento.
There is a deep gorge that runs through the middle of town. In one end of the gorge is the remains of an old mill. It looked very lush and green down in the lower levels. It looks like there are a lot of microclimates in the gorge.
Much of the downstream section of the gorge has been built over and a major plaza rests over the gorge. On the other side of the plaza the gorge is now a long, hairpin road that leads down to the waterfront.
We saw lots of lemons for sale everywhere. Limoncello, an alcoholic lemonade, is very popular here.
As in much of the rest of the Mediterranean, we see lots of cats here. And this t-shirt fits right in.
We walked over to a city park with great views of the Bay of Naples, the cliffs of Sorrento and the beaches and beach clubs at the base of the cliff.
Facing the park was the St. Francis Church…
and the cloisters.
We started heading up to the main street when we stumbled across the little gem that is St. Paul’s Church.
The church was featuring an exhibition of works done by the student’s of an inlaid woodworking school. The works were amazing.
From there we headed found our to the main street. We had lunch pretty late and didn’t want to go back to the hotel and then come back down for dinner so we decided to have a very early dinner or late lunch dessert…banana splits. Yummy.
Then we found the nearest taxi stand and caught a taxi up to the hotel. It is still early so we expect to get more work done and some resting.
