Mary opted out
of the shore excursion today, so Paul headed out on his own.
Views of the
port at Thessaloniki.
The excursion drive gave good views of the Olympus Mountains with snow on them. The highest peak is 10,000 feet. Weren’t expecting snow Greece.
The first place of interest was the Platamon Caste, built in 1204 to 1222. This was just a drive-by but there were pretty good views.
On the drive.
The first stop was the village of Palaios Panteleimonas. The village was up in the hills with great views from the village. Views from the village.
The village had been bombed during World War II as Greek partisans were hiding in the mountains near the village. After the war the village was abandoned. However, the government eventually started work on the village restoration.
It was very quaint with red tile roofs,
windy cobblestone streets…
and stone buildings.
A local market was in progress and offered lots of interesting items to photograph.
This was a very old coffee shop where the group stopped for refreshments.
Then it was on to the small village of Litochoro…
gateway to the Enipea Canyon. The group took a hike into the canyon to a waterfall.
Then it was lunch afterwards and back to the ship.
