Apr 26 – Drive to Sorrento

We had breakfast and packed everything back up.  Our driver arrived a bit early but we were ready for him and we were on the road to Sorrento by about 9:30am.

The countryside is lovely with hillsides farms and small village.

And a very colorful factory.

Once we approached Naples we started getting good view of Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano infamous for burying the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

Once we got into Naples the traffic picked up and it was a slow drive to Sorrento.  The road is two lanes and there was a lot of traffic.  We were able to pull off in a couple of spots where we had great views of the coastline and Sorrento below.  It sits on rolling hills overlooking steep and very tall cliffs.  And it’s beautiful.

We finally made it into Sorrento…and the driver kept going.  We had been given a couple of options for the hotel…right in town of a bit farther out but nicer with good views.  We opted for the views.  The hotel is a lovely boutique hotel with good views and fine accommodations.

Unfortunately, there is nothing around except other hotels.  No shops, no restaurants.  And the hotel itself didn’t have a restaurant.  This means long hikes or taxi rides into town for meals.  Not a good decision.

We arrived at lunchtime and the hotel indicated that the hotel next to us had a restaurant.  So we headed over there.  Great views, limited menu selection (if you are vegetarian or don’t like seafood), and pricy but non-descript food.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at the hotel doing some work and then headed down the long hike to downtown to find some dinner.  Its about a 25 to 30 minute walk.  Downhill.  Which means it will be uphill on the way back.  We did find a nice restaurant and split a pizza margarita.  Paul had apple pie and ice cream for dessert.  Mary tried a bite but otherwise passed on the sweets.

Then it was the long hike back up the hill and to bed.
